College of Education and Health Sciences - Spring 2021

I am pleased to welcome you to the first installment of the College of Education and Health Sciences Newsletter. It is our goal to share with our students, parents, and alumni a small glimpse of all the amazing things that are happening in our College and the people that are accomplishing them.

The College is composed of seven distinct departments, 61 faculty, staff and administrators, and 900 undergraduate and graduate students. We offer a number of baccalaureate, master, and doctoral degrees for our students. Our departments are housed in two different locations, Graves Hall on the home campus and in the Stone Family Center for Health Sciences located in downtown Evansville.

Despite the array of programs and degrees offered, central to our College is our mission: to prepare our graduates to be critical thinkers, lifelong learners, and advocates for those they serve, and to be committed to social and civic responsibility. We take this responsibility seriously and have designed our curricula and experiential opportunities to assist students in their pursuit of excellence and in preparing them to become competent and caring service-oriented professionals.

We hope that this quarterly update will provide you with some additional information about what is occurring in our College. Please feel free to contact myself or Jaime Wilder in my office if you have any questions.

With my best,

Mary P. Kessler
Dean, College of Education and Health Sciences

Overcoming obstacles, breaking down barriers, and caring for our community

The spirit of Ace CARE beats fiercely in the heart of the University’s Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program. This organization is a three-branch, student-operated, pro bono physical therapy clinic. Through the Ace+ PT branch, we provide orthopedic care in an outpatient clinic for people who are uninsured, underinsured, and homeless in our community. In 2015, we grew our organization by creating ACErcise, a group exercise program for individuals that is designed to lessen the impacts of a range of neurological conditions. In 2018, we broadened our care yet again to a new population with the birth of AceBuddies, a group fitness program for individuals with disabilities.

Faculty member publishes work

Congratulations to Deborah Becker, PhD, on her recent article, "Finding Your Way with the INACSL Standards of Best Practice: SimulationSM: Development of an Interactive Web-Based Guide and Roadmap" published in Clinical Simulations in Nursing. This guide was developed to ensure quality simulation-based learning. The guide is a web-based and interactive guide to introduce novices to implementing INACSL standards in simulation. It identifies a starting point and provides learning activities and resources to support the implementation of the standards. Becker came to the University of Evansville in January 2020, bringing over 15 years of nurse education experience. This semester, she is teaching therapeutic communication to freshman nursing students and medical surgical nursing to juniors.

Thanks to a generous grant of $735,247 from the Governor's Emergency Education Relief (GEER) Fund, UE's School of Education has been able to offer Google Workspace professional development for just over 400 teachers and principals this academic year. Two additional cohorts will receive the training this semester.

In addition, 55 tutors have provided over 487 hours of tutoring to students in the region to help address academic challenges. Schools partnering with UE include community schools in Loogootee, North Lawrence, Orleans, and Shoals plus schools in the Catholic Diocese of Evansville, Warrick County Schools, and Tell City Jr-Sr High School.

UE alumna credits MS in leadership for essential skills during COVID crisis

More than ever before, organizations need innovative and visionary leadership during these challenging times. The University of Evansville Master of Science in Leadership program provides the educational experience and leadership skills professionals need during times of crisis.

Elizabeth Thompson is a May 2020 graduate from the MS in Leadership program and describes how her graduate degree has helped her during the COVID-19 pandemic:

Elizabeth Thompson
MSL Graduate, May 2020

“I am the service line administrator of medicine specialties with IU Health Southern Indiana Physicians. We have had rapid-fire change over the last several years, but nothing compared to the changes that have occurred because of COVID-19. The knowledge I obtained while earning this degree seemed to be designed specifically to guide me as a leader through this crisis. I am a better communicator, more anticipatory of the needs of the people reporting to me, and I feel calmer and more capable leading through crisis. I have more tools in my toolbox. I have a broader vision and greater competence in understanding people, how to evaluate their needs, and adjust my leadership style to meet their needs.”

If you are ready to take that next step in furthering your career, contact the Center for the Advancement of Learning to learn how the MS in Leadership program can make a difference in your career opportunities.
